Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No

SOMETIMES YES, SOMETIMES NO
SOMETIMES STOP, BUT SOMETIMES GO
JUST REMEMBER NO ONE, NO ONE
ALWAYS ALWAYS GETS THEIR WAY
SO STOP THROWING FITS & POUTING
AND LEARN HOW TO OBEY
YOU WILL NEVER NEVER GROW
UNTIL YOU FINALLY SAY
SAY IT! SAY IT! COME ON SAY IT!
I’M TOUGH AS A BOOT! JUST WATCH ME
DO THIS GOD’S WAY!
— Song: Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No; Album #2

For my kids, I always felt this little song just HELPED the “pain” (I’m being sarcastic… sorry!) of NOT GETTING their way by nicely reminding them that SOMETIMES they do! Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes they get to go.

Children can be (and NEED to be) “set free” from the poor choice to OVERREACT and treat every disappointment as the archenemy of happiness!

We create emotional growth and maturity in our little ones when we normalize not getting our way every time and minimize the difficulty of just moving on, understanding that next time it might go our way!

Anytime we can celebrate positive reactions for the denial of our own desires is a significant moment. Go for it! Most kids do not want to be labelled as a “cry baby”. Most kids would rather be happy. Pouting is never happy and definitely should not be normalized. It is miserable for everyone involved! So the quicker we can move on to focus on good things, the better.

I like the honesty of this song and making it okay to admit we are tempted to feel sad (or mad) when the answer is “NO”.

We’re not dealing with robots obviously; our children’s emotions are quite developed and often expressed dramatically (ya think?…). That is not abnormal.  They have no filters, understanding, or behavior patterns until we as loving, patient adults walk them through these early years and form their perspective.

Wise parents keep from overreacting themselves and model self control. You can handle this!
